> How to open 7z files on Mac: extract 7-Zip archives in your browser or with a free Mac unarchiver. Covers LZMA2, split .7z.001 files and passwords.

To open a 7z file on a Mac, drop it into a browser-based 7-Zip extractor such as Filevale's [Extract 7Z](/extract-7z/), choose the files you want and download them. You don't need to install 7-Zip, which has no official Mac app, and the archive stays on your Mac.

A `.7z` file is a 7-Zip archive, popular on Windows because it compresses tighter than ZIP. macOS doesn't open it out of the box, so Finder hands it to Archive Utility, which fails. Here's how to get the files out, what to do with split archives, and which desktop apps make sense if 7z files are a regular thing for you.

## Why your Mac can't open 7z files

7-Zip's format uses LZMA and LZMA2 compression, which Archive Utility doesn't include. The official 7-Zip program is built for Windows; on macOS there's only a command-line port. So a 7z download looks like a dead file until you add something that understands the format.

## Open a 7z file on Mac in your browser

[Open Extract 7Z](https://filevale.com/extract-7z/)

1. Open [Extract 7Z](/extract-7z/) in Safari, Chrome or Firefox.
2. Drag the `.7z` file onto the page, or click to choose it from Downloads.
3. Browse the list of folders and files inside the archive.
4. Tick what you need and click **Extract**.
5. Save each file on its own, or download everything as one ZIP that Finder opens natively.

The archive is decompressed by code running in the browser tab, so nothing is uploaded. LZMA and LZMA2 archives, the defaults in 7-Zip, are supported. If a file's extension is wrong or missing, [Extract Archive](/extract-archive/) detects the real format from the file itself and also handles ZIP, RAR and TAR.

Filevale for Mac is in App Review and coming soon to the Mac App Store. Until then, use the free web tools above on your Mac, or the [Filevale iPhone app](https://filevale.com/go/ios?src=guide-md).

## Desktop apps for 7z on Mac

If you open 7z archives often, a dedicated app saves a step. Free unarchivers such as The Unarchiver and Keka are widely used on macOS: once installed, double-clicking a `.7z` in Finder extracts it next to the original. Keka can also create 7z archives. In Terminal, `brew install sevenzip` gives you the `7zz` command, and `7zz x archive.7z` extracts it. Pick a desktop app if it's weekly work; use the browser for an occasional file.

## Split 7z archives (.7z.001, .7z.002)

Big 7z archives are often split into numbered volumes: `backup.7z.001`, `backup.7z.002` and so on. They're one archive cut into pieces, so every volume has to be present, complete and named in sequence. Put them all in one folder and open the `.001` file with a tool that supports volumes. If one piece is missing, extraction stops there. Our [7-Zip extractor guide](/guides/7zip-extractor-online/) covers more 7z formats and edge cases.

## Password-protected 7z files

7-Zip can encrypt both file contents and file names with AES-256. The browser extractor can't open encrypted 7z archives yet, and it says so rather than handing you broken files. For those, use a desktop unarchiver or `7zz x -pPASSWORD archive.7z` in Terminal. If you control how the archive is made, a password-protected ZIP is easier for recipients: it opens on any Mac and in the browser.

## When the archive is a mix of formats

Downloads from game mods, scientific datasets or old backups sometimes contain a 7z inside a ZIP, or a `.tar` inside a 7z. Open the outer archive first, then open the inner file the same way. ## Frequently asked questions

### Is there an official 7-Zip app for Mac?

No. 7-Zip's graphical app is Windows-only, and the official Mac version is a command-line tool called 7zz. On a Mac you can extract 7z files in the browser, with a free unarchiver app, or with 7zz from Homebrew, all of which read the same 7-Zip format.

### Are 7z files safe to open on a Mac?

Extracting a 7z file only unpacks its contents; nothing inside runs. Done in the browser, the archive also stays on your device. Be careful with what comes out, especially apps, scripts and documents with macros from unknown senders, and let macOS Gatekeeper check any app before you run it.

### Why is my 7z file so much smaller than the files inside?

7-Zip's LZMA2 compression is stronger than classic ZIP, especially on text, code and similar files. Already-compressed files such as JPG photos, MP4 videos and MP3 audio barely shrink in any archive, so a 7z full of media will be close to the size of its contents.

### Should I send 7z or ZIP files to Mac users?

Send ZIP. Every Mac, Windows PC, iPhone and Android phone opens ZIP files without extra software, while 7z needs a separate tool on most devices. The size saving of 7z is rarely worth the recipient's confusion, and ZIP can still be protected with AES-256 encryption.
