      How to use Remove Metadata

      1. Choose your JPG, PNG, WEBP, HEIC, PDF, DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, MP4, MOV, M4V, WEBM, MKV, MP3, M4A, WAV or FLAC file: drop it on the page or click to browse. You can add several at once.
      2. Click “Remove metadata from”. Everything happens on your device.
      3. Check the list of what was removed under each file, then download the clean copy. Your original is not changed.

      Private by design

Unlike most online metadata removers, Filevale never uploads anything. The work happens inside your browser, so it is fast, works with confidential files, and there is no queue or waiting for a server.

      About the formats

JPG: JPG (JPEG) is the most widely supported photo format. It uses lossy compression, so files are small, but it has no transparency and loses a little detail every time it is re-saved.

PNG: PNG is lossless and supports transparency, which makes it ideal for screenshots, logos and graphics. Photos saved as PNG are several times larger than JPG.

WEBP: WebP is Google's web image format: usually 25–35% smaller than JPG or PNG at the same quality, with transparency, but some older apps and editors can't open it.

HEIC: HEIC (HEIF) has been the default iPhone photo format since iOS 11. It keeps high quality at about half the size of JPG, but Windows, many websites and older apps can't open it.

      Frequently asked questions

      What is file metadata?

Information stored inside a file besides its content: where and when a photo or video was taken and with which phone, who wrote a document and at which company, which app made a PDF. It travels with the file when you share it.

      Which files can I clean?

Photos (JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC), PDFs, Word, Excel and PowerPoint files (DOCX, XLSX, PPTX), videos (MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM) and audio (MP3, M4A, WAV, FLAC). Add several at once; each is cleaned the right way for its type.

Are comments and tracked changes removed from Word files?

No. They are part of the document content, not its metadata. Accept or delete tracked changes and comments in Word before sharing if they shouldn't be seen.

      Is Remove Metadata free?

Yes. It is free to use right now, with no daily limits or watermarks, and batch processing and ZIP downloads are included. No account or sign-up is needed, downloads included. Filevale is supported by optional donations.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Remove Metadata runs entirely in your browser using code that rewrites the file's metadata blocks in your browser (FFmpeg in WebAssembly for video and audio, PDF-lib for PDFs). Your files never leave your device, so it is safe for private and confidential content.

Does removing metadata change the photo or video?

No. JPG, PNG and WebP photos keep every pixel (only the metadata blocks are rewritten), and videos and audio are copied without re-encoding, so quality is identical. A rotated photo keeps its orientation so it still shows the right way up. HEIC photos are saved as high-quality JPG.

      Which metadata is removed?

Photos: EXIF (GPS location, camera and lens, serial number, date taken, software), XMP, IPTC and comments. Videos and audio: GPS location, device, dates, title, artist, comments, chapters and cover art. PDFs: author, title, creator app, dates and XMP. Word, Excel and PowerPoint: author, last editor, company, manager, dates and custom properties.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. It works in any modern browser (Safari, Chrome, Edge, Firefox) on iPhone, iPad, Android, Mac, Windows and Chromebook. There is nothing to install.
