How to Remove EXIF Data From Photos Before You Share Them (Any Device)

Delete GPS location, camera and date taken from JPG, PNG, WebP and HEIC photos in your browser, plus the built-in options on iPhone, Windows and Mac.

To remove EXIF data from a photo, open it in a metadata remover, strip the hidden tags and share the clean copy instead of the original. Filevale's Remove EXIF Data from Photos does this in your browser for JPG, PNG, WebP and HEIC files, deleting the GPS location, camera, date taken and software without uploading anything. Below are the steps, plus the built-in options on your phone or computer.

What EXIF data is and why it matters

Every photo from a phone or camera carries hidden information besides the picture itself: where it was taken, when, and with which device. That travels with the file when you share it. A photo of your new sofa for a marketplace listing can quietly include the GPS coordinates of your home.

Many social networks remove EXIF data when you post publicly, but email, messaging apps that send files as documents, cloud links and marketplaces often keep it. Removing it yourself before sharing is the safe choice.

Remove EXIF data in your browser

Remove EXIF Data from PhotosRemove EXIF data from photos: GPS location, camera, date taken and software are deleted from JPG, PNG, WebP and HEIC, without re-compressing. Nothing is uploaded.Open tool
  1. Open Remove EXIF Data from Photos and drop your JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC file on the page, or click to browse. You can add several at once.
  2. Click Remove metadata from. Everything happens on your device.
  3. Check the list of what was removed under each file, for example GPS location, camera model and date taken.
  4. Download the clean copy. Your original is not changed.

The tool is free with no watermarks, and batch processing and ZIP downloads are included, so you can clean a whole set of photos in one go. Files are processed in the browser and are not uploaded, which matters for personal pictures, ID photos and screenshots of documents. It works in any modern browser on iPhone, iPad, Android, Mac, Windows and Chromebook, with nothing to install.

On iPhone, the Filevale app for iPhone has the same kind of tools on-device and is the easiest route; the browser tool is the no-install alternative.

What changes in the file, and what doesn't

JPG, PNG and WebP photos are rewritten without touching the image data, so every pixel is identical and nothing is re-compressed. HEIC photos are different: their metadata can't be edited in place in a browser, so they are saved as high-quality JPG. If you need to keep HEIC, use your phone's built-in option below. For a plain format change, there is HEIC to JPG.

Phones store rotation as an EXIF tag. Filevale keeps only that one tag, with no other information, so a portrait photo still shows the right way up.

Cleaning videos, PDFs and Office files too

Remove MetadataRemove hidden metadata before you share a file: GPS location and camera from photos and videos, author and company from PDF, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Runs in your browser.Open tool

Photos are rarely the only thing you share. Remove Metadata cleans photos, PDFs, Word, Excel and PowerPoint files, videos and audio in one place: GPS location and camera from photos and videos, author and company from documents. For just video and audio, Remove Metadata from Video & Audio deletes location, device and dates while copying the streams without re-encoding. For PDFs, see how to delete metadata from a PDF.

Built-in options on your phone or computer

  • iPhone: when sharing from Photos, tap Options at the top of the share sheet and turn off Location. This removes the location for that share only; the rest of the EXIF data stays.
  • Windows: right-click the photo, choose Properties, open the Details tab and click Remove Properties and Personal Information. You can create a copy with the properties removed.
  • Mac: open the photo in Preview, choose Tools → Show Inspector, and use Remove Location Info on the GPS tab if it appears. Other tags are not removed this way.
  • Prevent it next time: turn off location saving in your camera app settings so new photos don't record where they were taken.

These are fine for one photo. For a batch, or to remove every tag, the browser tool is quicker.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove the location from a photo?

Drop the photo into Remove EXIF Data from Photos and click Remove metadata. The GPS coordinates and the rest of the EXIF data are deleted, and you download a clean copy. Each result lists what was found, so you can confirm the location is gone.

Does removing EXIF data reduce photo quality?

Not for JPG, PNG or WebP. Only the metadata blocks are rewritten, so every pixel stays identical. HEIC photos are the exception: they are saved as high-quality JPG because HEIC metadata can't be edited in place in a browser.

Do social networks remove EXIF data for me?

Many do when you post publicly, but you can't count on it everywhere. Email, messaging apps that send files as documents, cloud links and marketplaces often keep the original data, so cleaning the photo before you share it is the safer habit.
