How to Remove Metadata From a Video Before You Share It (Any Device)

Strip GPS location, phone model, dates and titles from MP4, MOV and MKV videos in your browser, without re-encoding and without uploading the file.

To remove metadata from a video, drop it into Remove Metadata from Video & Audio, click Remove metadata from, and download the clean copy. The GPS location, device, dates, title and other tags are deleted, while the video and audio streams are copied as they are, so the picture and sound do not change. Here is what that metadata is, how the tool works step by step, and what your phone can do on its own.

What metadata is hiding in a video?

Phone videos usually carry more than the picture and sound. iPhone and Android videos typically store the GPS position where they were filmed, the phone model and the date. Videos and audio files can also hold a title, artist, comments, chapters and cover art. All of it travels with the file when you send it by email, post it on a marketplace or share a cloud link, and anyone who opens the file details can read it.

  1. Open Remove Metadata from Video & Audio and choose your file: drop it on the page or click to browse. MP4, MOV, M4V, WEBM, MKV, AVI and 3GP videos work, and you can add several at once.
  2. Click Remove metadata from. Everything happens on your device.
  3. Check the list of what was removed under each file, then download the clean copy.

Your original file is not changed, so you keep a copy with the date and location for your own records. The tool runs in your browser using FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly, so the video never leaves your device. That matters for clips of your home, your children or anything filmed somewhere you would rather not pin on a map.

Why the video looks exactly the same afterwards

The tool does not re-encode the video. The video and audio streams are copied as they are, so quality and file size stay the same, and even long videos are done quickly. Portrait videos keep their rotation, so a clip filmed upright still plays upright.

If the file is also too big to send, clean it first and then shrink it with Compress Video, which makes videos smaller (up to 1280p, H.264) in your browser. The guide on reducing video file size explains the size side in more detail.

Cleaning photos, documents and videos together

If you are sharing a mix of files, for example a video, a few photos and a PDF, Remove Metadata takes them all at once. It removes GPS location and camera details from photos and videos, and author and company from PDF, Word, Excel and PowerPoint files, cleaning each one the right way for its type. For photos only, Remove EXIF Data from Photos does the same job for JPG, PNG, WebP and HEIC, and the guide on removing the location from a photo before sharing covers that case.

Built-in options on iPhone and Android

On iPhone, when you share a video from the Photos app, tap Options at the top of the share sheet and turn off Location. That removes the location from the copy you send, but other details such as the device and date can still be included. To stop new videos from being tagged at all, go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Camera and choose Never.

On Android, most camera apps have a setting to turn off location tags for new photos and videos. The exact name depends on the phone maker, so look in the camera app's settings. Neither option cleans videos you have already recorded, which is where the browser tool helps.

Frequently asked questions

Does removing metadata reduce the video quality?

No. The video and audio streams are copied without re-encoding, so quality is identical and the file size stays the same. Only the metadata is removed, and portrait videos keep their rotation.

Which metadata does the tool remove from a video?

GPS location, device, dates, title, artist, comments, chapters and cover art. After each file is processed you see a list of what was removed, so you can check before you download the clean copy.

Can I remove metadata from audio files too?

Yes. The same tool works on MP3, M4A, WAV, FLAC, OGG, OPUS and AIFF files. ID3 tags such as title, artist, album and comments, the embedded cover picture and chapters are removed, which is useful before sharing a voice recording or a demo track.
